We have all heard the old adage ‘The Map Is Not The Territory”. We can read, research the internet and watch videos about any country or subject that fancies our interest. But this is just it. When we read or research the internet, we use our mind to acquire and process the information. It’s an intellectual journey. We might acquire lots of information and knowledge about a certain subject, but we have not yet integrated it into our being. Since we have not experienced it physically, emotionally and spiritually it has not yet become part of who we are.
Well, it took me almost a lifetime to fully integrate and understand this concept.
I grew up in Germany, which until the dissolution of the Soviet Union was a very homogeneous country with only a limited amount of foreign guest workers present. Germany’s cultural, educational and social-economic DNA after the war was very homogenous and all who lived in Germany had one goal in common, namely to rebuild lives, forge careers, erect cities and strive to create a better life for themselves and their children.
Since Germany was and is such a small country compared to the US, China or India, German children were exposed from early childhood on to hearing different languages, eating different foods, and experiencing different cultures when traveling to the other European countries. Our senses were attuned to accepting differences without judgment. What we perceived with our five senses was integrated and not taught. What we perceived with our five senses was experienced and integrated and not taught, intellectual or consumed knowledge and awareness.
I mention this because after having traveled to many countries myself, I eventually relocated from Germany, first to California and then to New York. I have experienced first-hand what it means to move to another country and culture and become a foreigner. Many of my achievements in my old country meant nothing here in the US. The people, culture and American habits were foreign to me. Lack of knowledge and experience caused uncertainty and insecurity. It took some time to experience and fully understand the differences, to learn anew the ‘how-to’ of almost every aspect of my life and to foster new relationships.
I share all this about myself with you to let you know that nobody understands better than I what it means to come to a country where the language, culture, customs, and financial and legal environments are unfamiliar. Trying to do business and buying or investing in real estate can therefore present many challenges. Working with an expert like myself can help reduce stress, uncertainty and sometimes even financial loss.
